AS1 skiers have a near-total or total visual impairment and all race wearing blacked-out goggles. A guide will ski in front of the athlete verbally giving directions down the course.

Generally, visually impaired skiers all race together as AS1-4 using a factored timing system, which alters the running speed of the clock.
