T53 is for wheelchair track athletes who have movement affected to a high degree in the mid-trunk and legs. Some also have available movement affected at low degree in the arms.

These athletes generate power solely from the arms and shoulders and have to stop pushing when using the compensator; the device which controls the steering of the front wheel for the bend.
